OM5 optical fiber helps data center construction

From the perspective of data center generic cabling, the utilization rate of optical fiber is becoming higher and higher. With the emergence of om5 fiber, the advantages of multimode fiber gradually extend to the data center. Since the multi-mode fiber (MMF) came into the market in the 1980s, it has experienced the evolution from om1, om2, OM3 to OM4. The effective bandwidth is increasing and the transmission distance is becoming more and more far.

In terms of structure, the geometry of om5 fiber is not different from OM3 and OM4, so it can be well compatible with these types of fiber downward. Om5 can also optimize short wave division multiplexing, reduce the number of parallel optical fibers to one quarter of the original, and use two core optical fiber (instead of eight core) to continuously transmit 40Gb / s and 100GB / s, while reducing the number of optical fibers, it also achieves higher data transmission rate.

In the long run, the data center will be upgraded to 100g / 200g / 400g in the future. Om5 fiber can greatly reduce the number of fiber cores and improve the effective transmission distance. Therefore, from the perspective of total investment cost, return on investment and risk control of data center, om5 optical fiber is the preferred transmission medium for optical communication in new data center. Om5 extends the wavelength range supported by OM3 and OM4 fiber horizontally. If we regard multimode fiber as a highway, the traditional om1, om2, OM3, OM4 multimode fiber has only one channel, while om5 has four channels, and the transmission capacity has been increased by four times. For 40g swdm4 optical module, OM3 optical fiber transmission distance is 240m, OM4 optical fiber transmission distance is 350m, and om5 optical fiber transmission distance is 440m; for 100g swdm4 optical module, OM3 optical fiber transmission distance is 75m, OM4 optical fiber transmission distance is 100m, and om5 optical fiber transmission distance is 150m.

In terms of single-mode optical fiber products, the gap between domestic brands and Europe and the United States is not large. However, there is still a certain gap between China and Europe and America in multimode fiber. Therefore, the emergence of om5 fiber is a rare opportunity for domestic manufacturers.
